Report a Crime FAQs

What if the incident is an emergency or it is occurring right now?

Call 911 immediately.

Is Online reporting free?

YES. Online reporting is free. Once you file a report and it is accepted, you will receive a free copy of the report for your records.

Can I report a crime online if I know who the suspect is?

No. Our online system is not designed to input suspect information. You will have to contact dispatch at (559) 600-3111 and report it to a Deputy Sheriff.

How long will it take to be reviewed and a permanent case number to be issued?

Once you file a report and receive a temporary case number, it could take up to two days for the report to be reviewed. Please check your email, including your spam folder, regularly for a response.

What is the difference between a Temporary case number and Permanent case number?

A Temporary case number (T12000XXX) is auto assigned when you submit your online report. This means that you have submitted a report for review and used for tracking purposes only. A permanent case number is assigned to you when your report has been reviewed and accepted.

What if the incident happened in another city or county?

...Can I still file the report online using this system?

NO. If the incident did not occur within an unincorporated area in the County of Fresno, then you must contact the Law Enforcement agency for that particular area.

Will I get a copy of the report once it is approved?

YES, you will be emailed a report in PDF format immediately once it is approved. It will be sent via email and you will be able to save it/print it/send it to your insurance company or credit agencies.

Can I report a Stolen Vehicle or Stolen License Plate(s) in Fresno County?

Yes.  If the theft occurred in Fresno County, contact Sheriff's dispatchers at (559) 600-3111 or the California Highway Patrol at 559-262-0400.  If the theft occurred in a different county, call your local law enforcement agency.

Can I report a Residential Burglary?

(When someone enters your home/garage/an enclosed structure without permission and steals property)
NO. The system is not designed for reporting this type of crime. You will have to contact dispatch, (559)488-3111, and report it to a Deputy Sheriff.

Can I report a traffic accident or a Hit and Run on line?

NO. You will have to contact the California Highway Patrol: www.chp.ca.gov

Can I report an Agricultural Crime?

(Theft/Vandalism of farm equipment, metals, copper wiring, cattle, chemicals)

NO. We have a specialized unit that requires specific information in the report. You will have to contact dispatch, (559)488-3111, and report it to a Deputy Sheriff.

Can I report an anonymous tip?

NO. This system is not yet designed for tips, but we are continuing to improve our system so that this feature would be allowed. You can report anonymous tips at (559) 498-STOP or online: http://valleycrimestoppers.org/

What happens to my report once it is accepted?

If you have received a permanent case number, your report is automatically transferred into our records management system, which is the same system used by deputies in the field. The report is then assigned to that area detective. The detectives have a case load that is worked by priority. You will not hear from a detective unless they are actively working on the case and they have developed leads.
